Recently, the "Learning Chinese Together: A New Heart-to-Heart Integration" Singapore Primary School Students' Learning Exchange Program was successfully concluded at Changjiang Primary School in Qidong. During the event, Singaporean primary school students gained valuable learning experiences, and the event received positive social feedback, attracting attention from overseas students interested in study tours.
The event officially kicked off with a speech from Director Zhou Minhua of the United Front Work Department, Taiwan Affairs Office, and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the municipal government. From May 27 to June 14, over the span of three weeks, we organized Singaporean students to go beyond the classroom during their free time. Accompanied by their parents and teachers, they experienced the unique charm of the Dongjiang region and learned about the process of making indigo print fabrics. They visited the Qidong Children’s Library to learn about traditional Chinese culture through books, and also went to rural fields where they enjoyed playing the erhu under the blue sky and white clouds and tasting local flatbread, experiencing the joy of music and food.
As a traditional Chinese tie-dye art rich in historical and cultural significance, indigo print fabric features a unique blue-and-white color scheme, simple patterns, and a completely handmade process, reflecting the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Qidong. To help Singaporean students and their parents better understand the culture of Qidong and traditional Chinese culture, we arranged for them to visit the Indigo Print Fabric Museum, where they experienced the making process and felt the charm of intangible cultural heritage.
Places beyond reach can be explored through words. To ensure that Singaporean primary school students fully benefited from this experience and gained a deeper understanding of Chinese traditional culture, we organized a visit to the Qidong Children’s Library, where they expanded their horizons through reading, learning about distant places and lives they may never experience.
Nature has a magical power that naturally relaxes and helps people grow. Being close to nature is something children long for and desire. To allow the Singaporean students to connect with nature and experience different forms of joy, we organized an outdoor camping trip for them. They were accompanied by sunlight and fresh air, engaging all their senses. This helped them escape the noise of the city, relax their minds, boost their energy, and better appreciate the local customs and beauty of Qidong.
"As one walks, one reaches; as one acts, success is certain." During the event, we took the Singaporean students to visit the Zhuozheng Garden, known as the "Mother of Chinese Gardens," and Tiger Hill, known as the "First Mountain of Wu," where they enjoyed the summer lotus flowers and the integration of ancient architecture. We also visited the Suzhou Museum, where they could see the organic combination of garden art and modern architectural techniques.
With each step moving forward, we achieve our goals. This learning exchange program has come to a successful end, and we hope that the Singaporean students will continue to love the Chinese language and traditional Chinese culture in their future life and studies. At the same time, we will remain true to our original intention, continuously innovate, and work hard to contribute to study tour education and the promotion of Chinese culture.
